I stayed long enough to ensure my vote for state delegate was counted, but due to my ever-present battle with bronchitis, I could stay no longer. Oddly enough, there are more people still coming in. It’s amazing to see really - this many people out on a Saturday not to see a sports event, but to ensure their voices are heard in this political process.
As I pulled out onto Decker Lane… I noticed that in every empty spot along the sides of the road, cars are parked as far as you can see. Not sure if they were trying to skip out on the $5 parking fee or simply got tired of waiting - but it’s pretty wild. As I head South on Decker, both sides of the road are filled with cars all the way to MLK.
As I reflect on the little part that I’ve played, I realize how little I know. The political machine has its own rules and its own culture. Everywhere you went you heard the “We’re all democrats” mixed in with the “Hil-la-ry! Hil-la-ry!” and the “Yes we can! Yes we can!” - it was hard to imagine that both sides would be pleased with the outcome and be able to join the “We’re all Democrats” voices.
My commitment between now and November is to spend some time understanding the positions of the candidates: city, county, state, and federal. I don’t want to vote blindly when it comes time to go to the ballot machine. While I’m pretty familiar with where the presidential candidates stand… I know little to nothing about the City Council election or the County or even the State. Hard to know which name to put a tick next to if you don’t even know what they stand for. Shame on me.
Hopefully, you see in these writings a man who is staying The Course and pursuing The Path amidst the pitfalls and selfish ways of being a son of Adam. I pray earnestly that my writing would encourage some of you by showing you that this journey - though arduous and sometimes tragic - is a journey of great satisfaction. A satisfaction greater than our greatest imaginings. The trials and refining fire of tribulation are to be recognized as a small shadow of the suffering of our Savior so that we can rejoice, as Peter and the disciples did, to be counted worthy to suffer for the sake of the Name.
