Just got back from seeing Iron Man with my wife (thanks honey!) at the Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar. We got there about 10 to 7 for the 7:10 show and it was sold out, so we bought tickets for the 8:00 show and noticed that the line had already formed. So we’re standing in line behind a group of Asians (not related to us) that started with like 4 and eventually grew to 8 or more (I was a little annoyed at this, but we were pretty far up, so… bygones). Jana and I both thought it interesting to be standing behind such a large group.
I began to hope greatly that this standing in line for 30+ minutes thing was going to be worth it. After all, it’s a super hero movie and, well, those are highly unpredictable. Most of them are really not that great as far as movies go, some are passable, and then you have a few gems (like Batman Returns). I have to admit… Iron Man is a gem. Funny, action-packed, geeky, and just plain fun. I loved this movie. Robert Downey, Jr. does a fabulous job playing Tony Stark in the typical redemption scenario (egotistical, hedonistic man gets epiphany through some great personal suffering or tragedy). No spoilers here - but I heartily recommend this movie… just go in looking for a fun story and you won’t be disappointed. (Stay all the way through the credits to see the teaser at the end.)
Oh - the funny thing? We ended up behind the exact same group of Asians on the way out the door… really we weren’t together.
Hopefully, you see in these writings a man who is staying The Course and pursuing The Path amidst the pitfalls and selfish ways of being a son of Adam. I pray earnestly that my writing would encourage some of you by showing you that this journey - though arduous and sometimes tragic - is a journey of great satisfaction. A satisfaction greater than our greatest imaginings. The trials and refining fire of tribulation are to be recognized as a small shadow of the suffering of our Savior so that we can rejoice, as Peter and the disciples did, to be counted worthy to suffer for the sake of the Name.
